How to Weatherproof Your Home for Winter

It still feels like summer but the forecast next week calls for cool, refreshing autumn air. The fall will fly by and soon we’ll be into the cold winter months. Don’t wait until then to weatherproof your home.

Follow RemodelWerks weatherproofing tips below to get your house ready for the big chill:

Replace old insulation in the attic. Attic insulation is an important defense against the energy-sapping cold. Proper insulation keeps the warm air down low in your living space so it doesn’t escape into the cold attic. Of course, if you’ve got a remodeled attic space or are thinking about building one, RemodelWerks can help you plan, design and build a cozy, energy-efficient bonus room in the attic, too.

Pay attention to weatherstripping around windows and doors. This is just as important as insulation because it helps protect the heat in your home from escaping via tiny holes or cracks. To test to see if you need to replace weatherstripping, give the door or window a wiggle. If light comes through when you do that or it’s frayed, chances are it’s time to replace the weatherstripping. Don’t forget, too, to check around other crevices, such as air conditioner mounting units, crawl spaces and mail slots—anywhere where light and air could sweep through.

Caulk around vents and windows, as well as any other openings to maximize your home’s energy efficiency. If there’s air coming through, it’s best to replace old caulking rather than applying a new layer on top of the old one.
